JONESBORO, Ark. (5/13/14) – The Arkansas State baseball closed out its 2014 home schedule with a 16-9 loss to No. 11 Ole Miss in front of a record crowd of 1,143 at Tomlinson Stadium Tuesday night.

A-State ( 29-23) nine runs on 14 hits, but could not overcome a strong start from the Rebels, who scored four runs in the first inning and never trailed in the game.

Zach Maggio had two hits and two RBIs, while Dustin Jones went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in their final home games. Maggio started a five-run rally, two-out rally in the eighth inning with a two-run double and Ty Michelotti singled home a run.

Matt Burgess drove in his second and third runs of the night with an RBI double to set the final at 16-9. The sophomore first baseman also drove in a run in the fourth inning and Joe Schrimpf scored a run on sacrifice fly.

The Red Wolves also scored a pair of runs in the seventh inning on a single by Dustin Jones and an RBI groundout from Austin Baker.

The Rebels (38-15) scored four times in the first, once in the fourth, five in the fifth, four in the seventh and two in the eighth.

Both teams combined to use 40 players, including 12 pitchers. Each team used six pitchers on the night, while no A-State reliever went more than two innings.

A-State will play its final regular season series of the year at Little Rock against UALR starting May 15.  Thursday and Friday night’s games will start at 6 p.m. while Saturday’s series finale will begin at 1 p.m. The games can be heard on 95.3FM The Ticket/970AM KNEA and on
