Tristan Johnson just completed his third season as an A-State assistant volleyball coach and first season as the team's Associate Head Coach after being promoted to the position June 2, 2016. He coaches the team's back row and libero.

Johnson helped lead the Red Wolves to a 25-8 record in 2016, including a 15-1 mark in SBC play and West Division Championship. He was key in helped A-State's defense register a digs per set average of 16.39 to lead the league and rank 44th in the nation. Additionally, opponents hit .160 against Arkansas State, which was the second best mark in the Sun Belt Conference and top 15 in the nation.

He helped libero Markie Schaedig earn the SBC Defensive Player of the Year award for the third straight season, all coming under his tutelage. She recorded 609 digs on the year and had a digs per set average of 5.30 to rank first in the Sun Belt and 11th in the country. Additionally, Schaedig was named an AVCA Honorable Mention All-American for the second time in her career, making her the first player in school history to earn All-American status twice.

The 2015 season was a memorable one for him as he was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association's "Thirty Under 30" list that honors up-and-coming coaching talent in the sport. He was one of just 12 Division I coaches to receive the honor.

He was instrumental in helping A-State register a 28-2 record, a perfect 16-0 mark in SBC play, a conference tournament championship, and its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1999 and fifth overall in program history.

The team had an average of 16.29 digs per set to rank second in the conference while libero Markie Schaedig was 13th in the nation in digs per set with 5.42.  The junior was also named the SBC Defensive Student-Athlete of the Year for the second straight season and was named to the AVCA Southwest All-Region Squad. A-State's defense held teams to a league-leading .155 hitting percentage, which also ranked ninth in the nation.

After the season, Johnson was named to the USA Volleyball Pan American Cup Coaching Staff as the squad's scout coach.

In 2014, Johnson oversaw an A-State defensive squad that registered an 18.29 digs per set average as a team, which was second in the nation behind Illinois State's 18.30 per set.  The Red Wolves' libero and defensive specialists accounted for 1,204 of the team's 2,085 digs.  He also helped coach libero Markie Schaedig to the best defensive season in school history as Schaedig set the school record for digs with 762 and led the nation in digs per set at 6.68.  She was named a Honorable Mention AVCA All-American, becoming the first player in school history to receive that honor, along with earned the SBC Defensive Player of the Year.

Johnson comes to Arkansas State after spending the last two seasons as a student assistant at the University of Alabama, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing.  His duties as a coach included assisting with drills, pregame warm-up, and scouting with the stat program. Additionally, he spent parts of the 2014 and 2015 summers as an intern with the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams.  His main responsibilities included practice video coordination for both squads.

Before going to Alabama, Johnson was a student assistant at Blinn College under Rehr and had a number of responsibilities including being the technology coordinator, handling stats, scouting, recruiting, and practice duties.  He was part of the staff when Blinn registered a 38-0 record and National Junior College Athletic Association Division I National Championship in 2011.  He served as the interim head coach at Blinn early in 2012 when he ran the offseason program and recruited.

In addition to his college experience, Johnson was the head coach of the Xcel Volleyball Club 13s in 2011 and Xcel Volleyball Club 18s in 2012.  He has worked in several college camps, including ones at Alabama, Texas A&M and Arkansas State.
