JONESBORO, Ark. (8/21/14) – The Arkansas State University women’s soccer team will open the 2014 season on the road at Murray State Friday at 3 p.m. at Cutchin Field. The Red Wolves return home Sunday afternoon for their home opener against Tulsa at 2 p.m. at the A-State Soccer Complex.
Coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge’s team opens the regular season on the road for the second time in the last five seasons. A-State holds a 5-7-3 mark all-time in regular season openers and holds a 5-4 edge against Murray State in the all-time series.
Sunday’s matchup against Tulsa will mark the fifth all-time meeting between the Golden Hurricane and Red Wolves with each squad winning twice in the series. This will be Tulsa’s first trip to Jonesboro since 2011, which resulted in a 1-0 Arkansas State victory.
The Red Wolves return 12 letterwinners from its 2013 team that advanced to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament for the second time in school history. The team finished with an overall record of 10-7-3, including a 7-1-1 mark in Jonesboro. SBC All-Conference and All-Tournament selection Loren Mitchell returns for her junior season, while SBC Preseason All-Conference pick Samhia Simao returns for her senior season.
A-State is coming off a remarkable two-year run in which it has won 21 matches, the most during any two-year span in program history. The squad has also had a dominating record at home, posting wins in 15 of its last 20 games while also tying the record for most home victories in 2013.
Sunday’s home opener will start at 2 p.m. at the A-State Soccer Complex, located off the Marion Berry Parkway on Red Wolf Trail adjacent to the A-State Tennis Complex and the intramural fields.
