HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE, Ark. (11/1/16) – Competing in its final fall tournament this season, Arkansas State concluded play Tuesday at the Little Rock Women’s Golf Classic with a combined 54-hole 927 that placed it tied for 11th among 16 teams.

Although the Red Wolves wrapped up play by posting their best single-round score of the tourney, a 307, they moved from sole possession of 11th place entering today into a tie for the position with Jacksonville State in the final standings. Playing at the Diamante Country Club, A-State shot a 310 for each of the first two rounds.

The team was led by Aracelly Jimenez Rios, who finished tied for 23rd place with a 229 total score as she collected her fourth top-25 showing in five outings played this season. The sophomore ended with a 79, but shot a 75 for both the first and second rounds.

Arkansas State finished just four strokes behind 10th-place Stephen F. Austin, while it defeated Wichita State, Louisiana-Monroe, Montana and Northern Iowa. Central Arkansas claimed the championship with an 891, UTEP took runner-up honors with an 897 and North Texas placed third with an 898.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t finish our fall season the way we wanted, but our young squad will take a lot of positive things into the spring,” said A-State head coach M.J. Desbiens Shaw. “This has been a great learning experience for our team.”

Following Jimenez Rios in the standing for A-State, freshman Grayson Gladden shot a 231, including a season-low 73 for the second 18 holes as she finished tied for 35th place. Kirsten Garner, a junior, ended the tournament tied for 38th place with a 232, which was her lowest three-round score of the season.

Junior Emma Miller posted the team’s best individual score today with a 73, helping her climb all the way from tied for 72nd place to 44th with a combined 233. Beth Ann Compton began play Sunday with a 76, but the sophomore followed with an 80 for each of the next two rounds as she finished tied for 57th place with a 236.

Also competing for the Red Wolves, junior Olivia Loiacano shot a 237 to tie for 61st place and freshman Marisa Marques finished tied for 64th place with a 238.

Arkansas State will begin its spring schedule Feb. 13-14 at the 4th Annual “All There August Challenge” at New Braunfels, Texas.
