@AStateSoccer Falls to Coastal Carolina in SBC Tournament
FOLEY, Ala. (11/2/16) – The Arkansas State women’s soccer team had its season come to an end with a 3-0 loss to Coastal Carolina in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Championship tournament Wednesday afternoon at the Foley Sports Tourism Complex.
The Chanticleers scored three goals in the in the second half and held the Red Wolves to one shot on goal on the afternoon to advance to the semifinals on Friday. A-State ends the season with a 6-8-3 overall record, while Coastal Carolina improves to 11-5-3.
The teams battled through a scoreless first half, but Coastal Carolina opened up the second half of play with an attacking mindset and found success with three shots in the first eight minutes of the frame. The first two attempts missed their mark, but the third found the back of the net when Ellie Taylor scored on a header thanks to an assist from Amber Adams in the 53rd minute.
The Chanticleers added to their lead in the 62nd minute when Daniella Famili scored on a first-touch on a pass from Adams from the left side of the box. Coastal Carolina scored its final goal of the match in the 76th minute with Brook Horist dribbled past her defender and sent in a ball to the far post to make it a three goal advantage.
A-State had a scoring opportunity in the 59th minute when it was down just one goal when Bailey Reed sent in a shot that hit the post and bounced to Arianna Delli Carpini who just missed have her shot roll across the endline for the equalizing goal.
Lindsey Brochu had a scoring chance in the 72nd minute, after taking a corner kick from Tayler Carter, but the shot sailed high over the net. Mykel Ward also had a chance in the 84th minute, but the attempt was saved but the Chanitcleer’s goalkeeper to prevent the Red Wolves from making a last minute rally.
Coastal Carolina held a 15-6 shot advantage on the day and put seven of its attempts on goal. Ponder made two saves on the day, while Alexis Philippe also made a pair of stops late in the match.
