SPARTANBURG, S.C. (11/4/16) – The Arkansas State women’s tennis team opened competition at the Wofford Invite at the Reeves Tennis Center with three singles victories and a win in the doubles’ bracket after the first day of play.

Victoria Roberts, Sabina Jeresic and Julie Gauguery all won their opening round matches on the day, while Gauguery teamed with Allison Quammen to earn a win in one of the doubles’ flights.

Roberts defeated Montse Mesalles 7-5, 6-2 to advance to semifinals off the College draw, while Jeresic won an exciting match over Georgia Southern’s Arianna De Winter. Jeresic lost the first 6-7 (3), but rallied for a 6-3 win in the second set and then put the match away with a 10-7 win in the third set to also advance to the semifinals in the black draw.

Gauguery moved into the semis of the gold draw with a straight set 6-3, 6-3 win over Western Carolina’s Jordan Strickland. In the doubles’ bracket, Gauguery and Quammen advanced to the semifinals of the white draw with 6-3 win over Patricia Recalde Pacua and Paula Rives Palau.

In other action, Victoria Pisani lost her opening round match to Emilia Bujan, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7, while Quammen lost to Lauren Reid of Wofford 6-3, 7-5. Pisani and Roberts also lost to Coastal Carolina’s Natalie Wall and Romane Delay 6-1.

Play will resume Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with doubles’ pairs taking the courts first, followed by the semifinals of the singles’ brackets in the afternoon.
