JONESBORO, Ark. (1/18/17) – Arkansas State head volleyball coach David Rehr announced the hiring of Brian Gerwig, who spent the last four seasons at George Washington University, as an assistant coach Wednesday.

Gerwig is expected to coach A-State’s back row and libero while playing an integral role in opponent scouting and game planning along with recruiting responsibilities. The GW volleyball program registered 70 wins during his four years as an assistant coach, including back-to-back 20+ win campaigns in 2014 and 2015.

“I've gotten to know Brian as a coach and as a man and I have been thoroughly impressed with him since the first time we coached against each other,” said Rehr. “I believe he is one of the next up-and-coming stars in the coaching ranks and I am blessed that he will join our program. Brian is a tremendous coach and recruiter, and I am looking forward to seeing how he leaves his mark on our program.”

A native of Louisville, Ky., Gerwig was responsible for scouting and game planning for the Colonials and coached six Atlantic 10 All-Conference selections during his four-year tenure. His first season with the program in 2013 saw GW post a 10-4 mark in A10 play, the most league wins since 2002, and also win a match in the conference tournament for the first time since 2006.

The momentum from 2013 carried over into 2014 as the Colonials registered a 22-8 record with an 11-3 mark in Atlantic 10 matches and advanced to the conference tournament championship match for the first time since the 2002 campaign with the help of Gerwig. George Washington posted another successful season in 2015 with a 21-11 record and advanced to the A10 Conference Tournament semifinals for the third season in a row before experiencing a down season in 2016.

“I would like to thank (Director of Athletics) Terry Mohajir, (Senior Woman Administrator) Amy Holt, and David Rehr and his family for this amazing opportunity to join the Arkansas State family,” Gerwig added. “David has been one of my mentors since I started my coaching career, and his guidance and advice have helped shape me as a coach. I am looking forward to being able to work with him on a daily basis, and I am excited to start preparing for next season with current and future Red Wolves.”

Prior to his time at GW, Gerwig spent 2012 as a volunteer assistant coach at Western Kentucky, helping the Lady Toppers to their most successful season in the history of the program. WKU finished with a 33-4 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. He worked in all aspects of the game with an emphasis on the defense and blockers. He helped coach two All-Americans and SBC Defensive Player of the Year, Ashley Potts.

Prior to his stint at Western Kentucky, Gerwig was the varsity volleyball head coach at Trinity High School in Louisville, Ky., guiding the Rocks to a 17-4 overall record in 2012 and their first state championship since the 2005 season.

Arkansas State finished the 2016 campaign with a 25-8 record and 15-1 mark in league play en route to a SBC West Division Championship.
