A-State Tennis Drops Doubleheader to Ole Miss
JONESBORO, Ark. (2/3/17) – The Arkansas State women’s tennis team suffered a pair of setbacks with a 6-0 and 4-0 loss to Ole Miss Friday afternoon at the Jonesboro Country Club.
The Red Wolves hosted the Rebels in a doubleheader match at the indoor courts at JCC and began the day by dropping the doubles’ point when Julie Gauguery and Shannon O’Brien lost to Arianne Hartono and Anna Vrbenska 6-2.
In singles’ competition Gauguery posted a strong showing against Hartono, who entered the week ranked No. 31 in the latest ITA Rankings. Hartono won the match 6-4, 6-3 but Gauguery remained close in each set before eventually falling.
“We played at their level for four or five balls in each point, but they difference was that they were able to do it for eight or nine balls in the point,” A-State head Kel Lange said. “We competed hard and we are getting better each time out. We have to continue our process and making strides in the right direction.”
In other matches Sabina Jeresic los to Anna Vrbenska 6-0, 6-2, while Shannon O’Brien lost to Zalina Khairudinova 6-3, 6-1 and Allison Quammen fell to Tereza Janatova 6-1, 6-1.
The day’s second match featured only singles’ competition with O’Brien losing to Tea Jandric 6-3, 6-1. Victoria Pisani lost to Alexa Bortles 6-0, 6-4 and Quammen won a set against Brooke Stevens in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 loss.
The Red Wolves will host Murray State in a home match of Feb. 10. First serve is set for Noon.
