RIO VERDE, Ariz. (2/24/17) – The Arkansas State women’s golf team began play Friday at the Rio Verde Invitational, recording an opening-round 309 that places it tied for eighth among 19 competing teams.

The Red Wolves were led by two players completing the first round among the top 20 individuals, including sophomores Beth Ann Compton and Aracelly Jimenez Rios. Compton carded a team-best 74 to put her in a tie for eighth place, while Jimenez Rios posted 75 to stand tied for 17th.

A-State is currently tied with Central Arkansas, only one stroke behind seventh-place Ball State and within three strokes of three teams tied for fourth place. UMKC leads the field after shooting a 295, while Northern Illinois and Eastern Michigan stand tied for second after both recorded a 300 at the Rio Verde Country Club.

Also competing for Arkansas State, Emma Miller is tied for 50th place with a 79. Maci Brooks and Marisa Marquez both shot a 68 to place them tied for 68th.

The three-day tournament is set to continue Saturday with the second round.
