A-State Women’s Golf Finishes Rio Verde Invitational Tied for Eighth
RIO VERDE, Ariz. (2/26/17) – The Arkansas State women’s golf team recorded a final-round 305 Sunday at the Rio Verde Invitational, completing the three-day tournament with a combined 909 that placed it tied for eighth among 19 teams.
The Red Wolves’ 909 was their second lowest three-round score this season behind only their 902 shot at the MVC preview in early October. A-State’s total included a second-round 295, posted yesterday, which tied its fourth lowest round at a road tournament over the last 12 years.
The second-round score followed an opening round 309 for A-State and helped the squad move from tied for eighth place to seventh. The Red Wolves were led by two players collecting top-25 finishes, including sophomore Beth Ann Compton in a team-best tied for 18th place.
“I’m proud of our team totals this tournament, and our individual performances are looking better each time out,” said A-State head coach M.J. Desbiens Shaw. “I was happy with Maci’s (Brooks) scores the last two days, and it’s nice to see that senior leadership.
“We are very close to our team goal, which is building consistency. It was an overall decent showing, knowing that our hard work is paying off for of us. Our performance today wasn’t as good because we didn’t putt very well, but our ball striking was consistent.”
A-State finished tied with Western Michigan, only one stroke behind seventh-place Little Rock and within 10 of fifth-place Wichita State. Eastern Michigan claimed the tournament title with an 889, while Northern Illinois finished runner-up with an 893 and UMKC claimed third with an 895.
Compton collected her fourth top-25 finish this year with a 54-hole 224 (74-72-78), which tied her second lowest three-round score this season. Maci Brooks shot a season-best 226 (81-71-74) to finish tied for 25th place, her second top-25 showing of the year.
Aracelly Jimenez Rios narrowly missed out on a top-25 performance, placing tied for 29th with a 227 (75-75-77) that was her second lowest 54-hole total this year.
Also competing for the Red Wolves, Emma Miller tied for 60th place with a 234 (79-79-76) and Marisa Marquez tied for 77th with a 238 (81-77-80).
Arkansas State returns to action March 13-14 at the Bradley Spring Break Invitational in Dallas, Texas.
