Chase Riley Named SBC Freshman and Newcomer of the Year

NEW ORLEANS, La. (3/3/17) – Freshman high jumper Chase Riley was selected as the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Track & Field Male Freshman and Newcomer of the Year, the league office announced Friday. Head coaches from each institution voted on the postseason awards.  

Riley earned a second place finish in the high jump at the SBC Indoor Championships last month. He cleared 2.14m (7-00.25) to place second, behind teammate Tiaan Steenkamp. His performance at the indoor championships moved him up to seventh on the program performance chart.

The Red Wolves had 12 individuals earn All-Conference honors at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships. Erin Farmer (shot put), Jamil Peeples (60m hurdles), Tiaan Steenkamp (high jump) and Cristian Ravar Ladislau (weight throw) each won gold medals in their respective events to earn first team accolades. Earning second team all-conference honors were; Darragh May (high jump), Hannah Dunderdale (pentathlon), Jaylen Bacon (60m dash/200m dash), Chase Riley (high jump) and Itamar Levi (shot put). Third team all-conference accolades were attained by; Shemiah Brooks (long jump), Heinrich Herbst (800m run) and Sam Bell (pole vault).
