A-State Finishes Third at Jan Weaver Invitational
MURRAY, Ky. (4/8/17) – The Arkansas State women’s golf team concluded the Jan Weaver Invitational with its best round of the two-day tournament Saturday, shooting a 300 to bring its 54-hole total to a 921 and finishing third among 10 teams.
A-State’s 300 score today matched its third lowest round this spring and helped it climb one place in the final standings after completing Friday’s first two rounds in fourth. The Red Wolves recorded a 310 and 311 for the first and second rounds, respectively.
“We had a great showing today, and I am very pleased with the team effort to put up a great score,” said A-State head coach M.J. Desbiens Shaw. “This was a very challenging course, but we learned from our mistakes over the course of the last two days and were able to move up one spot in the standings today.”
Arkansas State finished ahead of Sun Belt Conference members ULM and South Alabama and just four strokes behind second-place Western Kentucky. Murray State, hosting the tourney at the Miller Memorial Golf Course, claimed the championship with an 893.
The Red Wolves were led by Marisa Marquez, who finished a season-best tied for fifth place with a combined 225 (73-76-76). The freshman’s total included a 73 for the opening 18 holes that was the lowest single-round score of the tournament by an A-State player.
Beth Ann Compton and Maci Brooks both finished with a combined 231 to tie for 10th place. Compton began play yesterday by carding a 77 and followed with an 80 for the second round and a 74 today. Brooks’ rounds included a 78, 79 and 74.
“Our individual finishes were great, starting with our freshman Marisa Marquez,” Desbiens Shaw continued. “She played solid golf and was very tough mentally. Maci Brooks and Beth Ann Compton also played consistent to get in the top 10.”
Also competing for the Red Wolves, Aracelly Jimenez Rios tied for 32nd place with a 239 (82-81-76) and Emma Miller tied for 41st with a 243 (84-76-83). Participating as individuals, Monica Lieving placed 44th with a 245 (83-83-79) and Grayson Gladden 45th with a 246 (82-79-85).
“I’m excited for practice next week and getting ready for our conference tournament,” Desbiens Shaw stated. “Our team is looking more prepared every day.”
Arkansas State is set to compete at the Sun Belt Conference Championships April 17-19 in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
