JONESBORO, Ark. (4/12/17) – Arkansas State redshirt freshman Matt Cole was named the Sun Belt Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week Wednesday, marking the third consecutive time the honor has been awarded to a Red Wolves player.

Cole received the recognition after claiming his first career tournament title, earning medalist honors at the Red Wolves Intercollegiate while leading Arkansas State to the team championship. He recorded a career-best 3-under 213 to finish atop the 85-player field.

A Fayetteville, Ark., native, Cole’s total included a second-round 70 that was also the best single-round score of his career. He also posted a 72 and 71 for the first and third rounds, respectively. Cole finished three strokes ahead of runner-up Matt Zakutney of Murray State, one of 16 competing teams at the tourney.

He became the second A-State player this season to be named the Sun Belt Conference Golfer of the Week as freshman Zan Luka Stirn also collected the award the previous two times it was issued.

The Red Wolves have won back-to-back tournament championships and now hold three titles over their last five times out. A-State possesses a 90-36-3 head-to-head record this season and is currently ranked No. 93 in the nation by GolfStat.com.

Arkansas State is set to play in the Hawkeye Invitational Saturday and Sunday, April 15-16, at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City. The 14-team field includes No. 11 Texas Tech, Kansas (43), Iowa State (52), Iowa (71), Minnesota (83), A-State (93), Utah (106), Kansas State (111), Denver (120), Marquette (118), Nebraska (138), DePaul (175), UMKC (167) and South Dakota State (196).
