A-State Baseball Falls 13-2 at Louisiana-Lafayette
LAFAYETTE, La. (4/14/16) – The Arkansas State offense collected seven hits off the Louisiana pitching staff, it was not enough at the Ragin’ Cajuns defeated Arkansas State 13-2 in the second game of the three-game series Friday night at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
Louisiana got to Peyton Culbertson from the start of the game when Ishmael Edwards tripled to lead off the game. He later scored on an RBI groundout by Brad Antchak. The Ragin’ Cajuns scored again later in the inning when Kennon Fotenot doubled to left centerfield that brought in Steven Sensley to give UL a 2-0 advantage.
A-State cut the Louisiana lead down to 2-1 in the second inning when Grant Hawkins drove in Jake Bakamus, who walked to start the inning, on an RBI groundout. The Red Wolves’ left two in scoring position however, despite having the bases loaded with Hawkins at the plate.
The Ragin’ Cajuns added three more runs in the second inning on an RBI fly out by Edwards, an RBI single off the bat of Antchak and a RBI double by Joe Robbins to take a 5-1 lead after two innings of play.
The Red Wolves struck again in the fifth when Bakamus singled in Joe Schrimpf on with a base hit to right field, but following an Alex Howard walk, the inning came to an end after a UL pitching change.
Arkansas State has other chances throughout the game but failed to convert with runners in scoring position, particularly in the early innings. Through the game’s first five innings, A-State stranded nine runners on base.
Louisiana-Lafayette struck again in the fourth inning when Senley hit a 2-run blast to right field, to make it a 7-1 deficit for A-State. In the fifth inning, the Ragin’ Cajuns scored twice on a sacrifice fly and a single to push their lead to 9-2 and also chased Culbertson from the game.
Sensley homered again in the seventh inning off Derek Birginske to make it a 13-2 lead.
Game three of the series will be Saturday afternoon at “Tigue” Moore Field with first pitch set for 1 p.m. The game be heard on 95.3FM The Ticket and online at AStateRedWolves.com
