MANHATTAN, Kan. (9/19/17) – The Arkansas State women’s golf team wrapped up play Tuesday at its season-opening tournament, finishing the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational in sixth place among nine teams with a combined 908.
Although the Red Wolves dropped from fourth place after the initial round to sixth in the final standings, both their second and third-round scores were lower than their total posted for the initial 18 holes.
A-State opened play at the tourney on Sunday at Colbert Hills Golf Course by shooting a 306 and then followed with a second-round 299 before recording a 303 today. The team’s 908 total was its second lowest three-round score over its last nine tournaments played, dating back to last season.
Arkansas State entered the final round tied with North Texas for fifth place, but the Mean Green was able to edge the Red Wolves by two strokes. A-State also finished within just four strokes of fourth-place Rutgers and defeated the two other Sun Belt Conference members competing in the tournament as Little Rock and Georgia Southern placed seventh and ninth, respectively.
Junior Beth Ann Compton and sophomore Grayson Gladden both shot a combined 223 and finished tied for ninth place to lead the Red Wolves.
“This was an exciting start to our season with the team scores we put on the board all three days,” said A-State head coach M.J. Desbiens Shaw. “Each round had very different conditions and we adapted really well. We are taking a lot of positives home with Beth Ann and Grayson finishing in the top 10. We played consistent golf the last three days."
Compton’s total included a 75 for each of the first two rounds, and she came back to card a 73 today for the lowest single-round score of the tournament by an A-State player. Dating back to last season, she has now posted three consecutive top-10 finishes.
Gladden collected the best finish of her career by shooting a 75 for the first round and a 74 for the next two. Her 223 total was the lowest three-round score of her career, and she now also has three career top-25 finishes to her credit.
Aracelly Jimenez Rios enjoyed her best round of the tournament today, a 75, helping her climb to 29th place in the final standings after ending the second round tied for 36th. The junior standout also shot a 78 and 79 for the first and second rounds, respectively, giving her a combined 232.
Also competing for the Red Wolves, senior Sarah Childers finished tied for 37th place with a 236 (78-74-84) and senior Emma Miller placed tied for 43rd with a 239 (82-76-81). Playing as an individual, freshman Maria Jose Atristain finished in 45th place with a 245 (84-78-83).
