JONESBORO, Ark. (10/7/17) – The Arkansas State volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (20-25, 22-25, 24-26) setback to Texas State Saturday night in a Sun Belt Conference West Division matchup at the Convocation Center.
Texas State (13-7, 5-1 SBC) out hit the Red Wolves (10-9, 3-3 SBC) by a count of .242-.154 and had 11 blocks to A-State’s seven. Amy Pflughaupt led the Bobcats with 19 kills on a .357 hitting percentage, while Erin Hoppe dished out 42 assists and Tyeranee Scott had six blocks.
Drew Jones led the Red Wolves with 13 kills, while Carlisa May recorded 11 of her own. Ellie Watkins handed out 35 assists and tied for a team-high four blocks with Jessica Uke. Tatum Ticknor picked up 16 digs and Timber Terrell registered two service aces.
“Honestly, we just aren’t a very good volleyball team right now,” A-State head volleyball coach David Rehr said. “We came out after set two and were better for most of set three, but then we folded under the pressure. We aren’t handling tough situations and responding to pressure well at all right now. Texas State has a good team though so they didn’t need the help that we gave them.”
The first set was a game of runs with A-State using a 5-0 run down 15-12 to take a 17-12 advantage. However, the Bobcats went on a 6-0 run to move in front 21-17 and would go on to take the set 25-20. Texas State controlled most of set two and led 21-14 before A-State battled back to within 24-22 before a kill by Pflughaupt gave TXST a 25-22 set two victory.
The Red Wolves raced out to an 11-4 lead in set three and led 19-11 before Texas State made a comeback. The Bobcats ended the set on a 15-5 run, the last two points coming on kills by Pflughaupt, to win the set 26-24 and match 3-0.
Arkansas State returns to action Monday, Oct. 9 against Little Rock. First serve from the Convocation Center is set for 6:30 p.m. and the match will be broadcast on ESPN3.
