LAWRENCE, Kan. (10/19/17) – The Arkansas State women’s tennis team concluded the first day of competition at the 2017 ITA Central Regional Championships with strong outings against some of the tournament’s top competitors.
In the singles’ bracket, senior Sabina Jeresic squared off against the tournament’s No. 5 ranked players Sofia Blanco of Oklahoma State and suffered a 6-1, 6-3 defeat. Transfer Berta Masdevall Masip also faced a ranked opponent in No. 16 Janet Koch of Kansas, but fell in two sets 6-0, 6-4,
Anita Detlava drew the toughest assignment of the first day after losing to No, Vladica Babic 6-0, 6-1, while Shelby King lost to Kansas’ Nina Khmelnitckaia 6-1, 6-2. All four student-athletes will move into the consolation bracket where play will begin Friday afternoon.
“We came here to play some of the best talent in collegiate tennis and we got that opportunity,” A-State tennis coach Kel Lange said. “We played a ranked player in every spot and the scores do not reflect how well we played today. We are looking forward to continuing competition and see how we pair up against other players in our region.”
In the doubles’ bracket King and Jeresic dropped their opening round match to the Jayhawks’ Tatiana Nikolaeva and Desponia Vogasari 8-3, while Masip and Detlava fell to Oklahoma State’s Vladica Babic and Sofia Blanco 8-3.
Play at the ITA Central Regional Championships will resume Friday morning with both main draw and consolation bracket matches.
