JONESBORO, Ark. (11/26/17) – The Arkansas State volleyball program accepted an invitation to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) as an at-large selection in the 32-team field as the full bracket was announced by the organization Tuesday night.

The Red Wolves (20-11) will play SIU-Edwardsville Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 3 p.m., in Oxford, Miss., to open the tournament. The winner of the matchup between A-State and SIUE (23-6) will advance to play the winner of Stephen F. Austin (26-7) and Ole Miss (17-14) Thursday night at 6 p.m. in Oxford, Miss. Arkansas State played both teams earlier in the season with a 3-0 win over the Ladyjacks Sept. 16 in Houston, Texas, and a 3-1 win over Ole Miss Sept. 2 in Jonesboro.

A-State and SIUE have only met once with the Red Wolves sweeping the Cougars 3-0 in Edwardsville, Ill., Sept. 13, 2014 as part of the SIUE Invitational. The Cougars finished second in the Ohio Valley Conference this season with a 13-3 record, but were upset in the first round of the OVC Tournament.

In all, 23 conferences will be represented with both the Big 12 and American featuring three teams each.  The Sun Belt, Mountain West, SEC, Horizon, and C-USA will each have two schools competing.  The SWAC, America East, MAC, Big South, Patriot, Missouri Valley, Summit, West Coast, Big Sky, Ohio Valley, Southland, ACC, Colonial, Big West, Southern, and MEAC with one.

The NIVC ran from 1989-1995 with A-State making four appearances in the tournament (1989, 1990, 1991, and 1993). The team compiled an 8-7 record in the event. This year’s appearance in the NIVC will be the first postseason appearance for Arkansas State since its 2015 NCAA Tournament berth.

A-State recorded its fourth straight season of 20 or more wins under head coach David Rehr’s leadership. The Red Wolves also advanced to the SBC Tournament semifinals for the sixth straight campaign after not earning a win in the event for 11 years prior to his arrival in 2012.
