RUSTON, La. (3/31/18) – The Arkansas State women’s tennis team earned its fifth victory of the season with a 4-0 victory over Grambling Saturday afternoon in Ruston, La.
The Red Wolves took the early advantage in the match by sweeping all three doubles’ matches to take the point. Berta Masdevall Masip and Anita Detlava improved their overall record to 6-6 with a 7-5 victory on court one, while Shelby King and Shannon O'Brien took a 6-3 triumph on court two to improve their mark to 8-6 on the year.
In the singles’ matches, A-State earned victories on courts three, four and five to complete the sweep. Jeresic defeated Karen Muswere 6-2, 6-1 on court two to improve her season mark to 7-5, while Masdevall Masip picked up her third win of the year with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Idah Longwe on court four.
Shannon O’Brien completed the day for the Red Wolves with a straight set 6-0, 6-3 win over Tanyaradzwa Magunje on court five. O’Brien now has a single’s record of 6-6 and one behind Jeresic for the team lead in wins.
“It was a good day,” A-State head tennis coach Kel Lange said. “We improved in areas that we needed to improve in and we continued to grow in our process.”
The Red Wolves will return to the courts for a pair of Sun Belt Conference matches April 6-7 against Louisiana and ULM in San Marcos, Texas.
