STATESBORO, Ga. (4/14/18) – The Arkansas State women’s tennis team was defeated by Georgia Southern 4-1 in a Sun Belt Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at the Wallis Tennis Center.
Berta Masdevall Masip captured the only win of the match for A-State with a 6-3, 6-2 victory on court four over Paula Boizader for her second win in as many matches. She now stands at 5 wins overall on the year.
Shelby King lost two tough sets to Arianne de Winter 7-5, 7-6 on court one. King led 5-4 in the first set before de Winter rallied from behind to take the opening point. Sabina Jeresic, who played on court two for the first time this season, lead to Emilia Bujan 6-4, 6-3 and also faltered after holding a 3-0 lead in the second set.
Anita Detlava was unable to finish her match on court three, but captured 7-5 victory in the first set, but then lost 6-3 to Ella Monsey in the second set. Detlava was up 3-0 in the third set at the time the match was called.
“We had a lot of opportunities today but we just could not close out when we needed to,” A-State head coach Kel Lange said. “We played well at certain times and Anita was playing some really good tennis when her match was called. Hopefully we can learn from this and make adjustments in the regular season finale tomorrow.”
The Red Wolves will close out the regular season against Mercer Sunday morning.
