JONESBORO, Ark. (4/17/18) – Arkansas State men’s basketball head coach Mike Balado announced today that forward JJ Matthews has signed his National Letter of Intent to join the program for the 2018-19 season.
“I am thrilled to add JJ Matthews, another outstanding young man, to this year’s recruiting class,” said Balado. “JJ is an exceptional talent. He is another legitimate scorer inside, but also has the ability to step out and shoot from mid-range. He is a tough, physical, player on the court. Aside from his physical talent, he also possess the attitude, demeanor and work ethic that we look for in our program.”
Matthews comes to Arkansas State with three years of eligibility remaining. He most recently played at Moberly Area Community College in which he played in 18 games, starting 16, while averaging 8.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. He shot 59.4 percent (63-106) from the field and 75.6 percent (31-41) at the charity stripe. He posted two double-doubles while scoring 10 or more points in seven of those 18 outings. He collected eight or more rebounds in 10 games and logged two or more blocks in 10 games as well.
“JJ has a strong body and finishes on the block through contact,” said Jerry Mullen from Mullen’s Sports and JUCO Top 100 camp. “JJ can score facing up to 15 feet and he rebounds the ball well. JJ has three years of eligibility and will be an immediate impact for the Red Wolves.”
Matthews spent his freshman season (2016-17) on the Towson roster, but missed the campaign due to injury. A native of Richmond, Va., Matthews played at Millwood School where he averaged 17 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks as a junior. His sophomore campaign saw the Bobcats win a state title while he averaged 13.8 points. 7.0 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game.
