SANDESTIN, Fla. (04/17/18) – The Arkansas State women’s golf team closed out the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Tuesday with its best round of the three-day event, shooting a final-round 297 as it finished tied for fifth place among 11 teams at the Raven Golf Club.
The Red Wolves were part of a three-way tie with South Alabama and Georgia State for fifth place after carding a 54-hole total of 921. A-State improved its position by one place each day after standing seventh and sixth at the conclusion of the first and second rounds, respectfully.
“I’m definitely pleased with the team score today, improving by 16 shots,” said A-State head coach M.J. Desbiens Shaw. “Unfortunately, we had a slow start in our first two rounds, but came back and had a respectable finish,” said Shaw.
Jimenez Rios ended the day tied for 10th place after carding a final-round 72 to give her a 226. Gladden tied for 20th place with a third-round 73 and 54-hole 230, while Compton tied for 24th place with a 77 and 231.
“I’m extremely proud of Aracelly’s top-10 performance at this tournament,” Shaw said. “She showed great leadership and consistency. Grayson and Beth Ann also had a great tournament, finishing in the top-25.”
Also competing for the Red Wolves, senior’s Sarah Childers and Emma Miller both recorded their lowest round scores of the tournament in the final round. Childers posted a 75 to complete the tournament with a 234 and tie for 33rd place. Miller tied for 42nd place with a third-round 77 and a final total of 244.
“Shout out to our two seniors, who contributed immensely in the last four years,” Shaw said. “We thank them so much for their loyalty in being Red Wolves.”
