PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. (4/19/18) – The Arkansas State women’s tennis team was defeated by Louisiana-Monroe 4-1 in the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Championship Tournament Thursday afternoon at the Peachtree City Tennis Center.
The Warhawks took the early advantage in the match with victories on courts one and three to grab a 1-0 lead. In singles’ competition, ULM won matches on courts one, four and six to advance to the quarterfinals round where the will play No. 3 Coastal Carolina Friday morning. With the loss, the Red Wolves’ season comes to a close with a 6-15 overall record.
In singles’ matches, Anita Detlava captured the only win over the day for A-State on court three with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Karolina Silwanowicz. Detlava rebounded after drooping the first set 6-2 to grind out a two point victory on set two and then cruised to a four points in the decisive third set.
On court one, Shelby King and Stefana Andrei were locked in a close contest throughout the afternoon with Andrea capturing a 7-5, 7-6 victory. King rallied in the second set to take a 6-5 lead, but Andrei sent the match into a tiebreak after tying it at 6-6. In the tie break Andresi jumped out to a 4-1 lead and eventually closed the match a 7-2 tiebreak win.
In other matches, Allison Quammen was defeated by Bianca Koen 6-1, 6-3 on court six, while Berta Masdevall Masip lost to Teodora Radu 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 on court four. Sabina Jeresic and Shannon O’Brien were each unable to finish their matches due to the ULM clinching the match after a victory on court four.
In the doubles’ point, Jeresic and Quammen lost to Madalina Grigoriu and Koen 6-1 on court three, while Detlava and Masip lost to Andrei and Karolina Snita 7-6 on court one.
