SANDESTIN, Fla. (4/23/18) – The Arkansas State men’s golf team improved its score from the first round to the second by 27 strokes, but climbed just two places from eleventh to ninth Monday at the Sun Belt Conference Championships after shooting a 286 for the second 18 holes of competition at the Raven Golf Club.

The Red Wolves posted the second lowest team score of the day as all five competing A-State players lowered their score from the first to the second rounds, helping them make up some ground on the 12-team field.  A-State’s 36-hole 599 has them tied with ninth place Louisiana and within five strokes of seventh-place South Alabama, but they will enter tomorrow’s final round of stroke play 11 back of fourth-place UT Arlington.  The top four teams at the end of stroke play advance to match-play competition Wednesday.

The Red Wolves were led by two players who completed the second round among the top 30 individual golfers. Senior Tanner Napier is tied for fifth place after shooting a one-under par 70 to give him a 36-hole total of 141. Sophomore Zan Luka Stirn is tied for 28th place after recording a second-round 73 to move his total score to 151.

Also competing for the Red Wolves, junior Jakub Bares scored a 71 in the second round to leave him tied for 39th place with a 36-hole 153.  Just two strokes back, sophomore Matthew Cole is tied for 50th place with a two-round total of 155. Cole carded a second-round 73, while junior Joel Wendin recorded a 72 in the second round to register a 36-hole 156 and put him in a tie for 53rd.

The third round of the Sun Belt Conference Championships will be played Tuesday.
