SANDESTIN, Fla. (4/24/18) – The Arkansas State men’s golf team posted its best score of the Sun Belt Conference Championships Tuesday, shooting a third-round 285 at the Raven Golf Club as it finished tied for eighth place among 12 teams with a 54-hole 884.

Arkansas State improved its team score each round of the tournament, but couldn’t overcome a slow start with a first-round 311 on Sunday. The Red Wolves cut 27 strokes off that score with a second-round 286 before coming back with its best 18-hole performance today.

A-State ended the tournament with two players finishing among the top-30 individual golfers. Senior Tanner Napier finished tied for sixth place while junior Jakub Bares tied for 29th place. Napier turned in a final round score of 73 to complete the tournament with a 214. Bares shot a third-round 69, tying his season low, to end the tournament with a 222.

“Tanner played really consistent for us over the three days and had a solid tournament,” said A-State head coach Mike Hagen. “Jakub played a really good second and third round to close things out.”

Sophomore Zan Luka Stirn and junior Joel Wendin both posted their lowest scores of the tournament on Tuesday. Stirn tied for 31st after carding a 72 in the final 18 holes to complete the tournament with a total of 223. Wendin improved nine positions after finishing with an even-par 71 in the final round to finish in a tie for 44th place (227).

Also competing for the Red Wolves was sophomore Matthew Cole, who tied for 57th place after posting rounds of 82-73-77 for a three-round total of 232.

“We didn’t lie down and quit, and we fought back in these last two rounds to a strong finish,” Hagen said. “Overall, we had a great regular season.”

A-State will wait to see if it will earn an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament when the selection show is held on May 2.
