KANSAS CITY, Mo. (9/6/18) – The Arkansas State volleyball team received double-doubles from three different players, but it wasn’t enough as the squad dropped its second straight five-set contest by a score of 3-2 (25-19, 17-25, 19-25, 25-21, 13-15) to UMKC Thursday night to begin the Kangaroo Classic at Swinney Recreation Center in Kansas City, Mo.
Macey Putt (22 kills, 11 digs), Ellie Watkins (42 assists, 10 digs), and Tatum Ticknor (14 digs, 11 assists) all put up double-doubles for A-State (2-5) with the 22 kills representing a season-high for Putt and the double-double for Ticknor being the first of her career. The Red Wolves also had more kills (58-55) and digs (55-48) than the Kangaroos (4-3). However, the visitors hit .158 to UMKC’s .226 with 11 more errors (35-24) and the Roos also had seven aces to A-State’s three.
The Red Wolves fell behind 12-6 in set one, but an 11-4 run, capped by a block from Putt, put Arkansas State ahead 17-16 and they never let the lead go in a 25-19 set one win. However, UMKC returned the favor in set two after the visitors went ahead 6-1. The home team rallied to go ahead 8-7 and went on to win the set 25-17 to even the match. The Kangaroos jumped ahead 20-11 in set three and went on to win 25-19 to go ahead 2-1 in the match.
The Roos went ahead 8-3 in the fourth set, but A-State bounced back to take a 15-14 edge on a kill by Peyton Uhlenhake. The Red Wolves went ahead 18-14 and led 24-21 with a service ace by Putt ending the set 25-21 in favor of the visitors to force a decisive fifth set.
The fifth set was a back-and-forth affair after A-State jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but the score was tied 10-10 through 20 points. The score was tied 13-13 after a kill by Putt, but a kill by the Kangaroos and an ace gave UMKC the set 15-13 and the match 3-2.
Tyrecia Lukes led the Kangaroos with 16 kills, while Alicia Harrington had 15 kills for the home team. The win for UMKC was the first over the Red Wolves in eight tries after A-State won the first seven.
Arkansas State returns to action Friday afternoon in the Kangaroo Classic with a 1:30 p.m. matchup against Southeast Missouri before a 4:30 p.m. contest against Providence.
