SAN ANTONIO, Texas (9/10/18) – The Arkansas State men’s golf team opened its 2018-19 season Monday at the Lone Star Invitational by recording a first-round 291 at TPC San Antonio’s AT&T Oaks Course that left the Red Wolves in second place among 15 teams.

The tournament’s opening round was suspended for approximately four hours due to heavy rain, but still saw three A-State players finish among the top 16 individual leaders to help put the squad in contention for the championship as it will enter tomorrow’s final round just two strokes behind host-school UT San Antonio. Monday’s play was originally scheduled to include a pair of rounds, but tournament officials shorted the day to 18 holes and the tournament to 36.

A-State was led by Zan Luka Stirn, who shot a 2-under 70 that placed the junior second and left him just two strokes behind UTSA’s Sean Meehan for the individual lead. Right behind Stirn in the standings at third place, senior Joel Wendin carded a 71 to also end the day under par.

Joining Stirn and Wendin among the top-16 leaders for A-State was senior Jakub Bares, who posted a 74. Also competing for the Red Wolves, freshman Luka Naglic and junior Matthew Cole both shot a 76 to put them in a tie for 31st place.

The Lone Star Invitational’s second-and-final round is set to get underway Tuesday at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start.
