LOUISVILLE, Ky. (9/29/18) – Arkansas State women’s cross country finished eighth while the men’s squad finished 27th at the competitive Louisville Classic Saturday.

Anaelle Charles paced the women’s squad with a 30th place finish in the individual standings among the 226 women’s racers. Charles completed the 5k course at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park in 17:39.3. Pauline Meyer was second among the Red Wolves’ finishers as she crossed the line 45th overall with time of 17:54.8.

While the women did not get off to a great start at the beginning, they made up for it by passing a lot of runners and moving up throughout the entire race," said A-State cross country coach Kyle Chandler. "Anaelle and Pauline were strong up front finishing not too far away from each other – and Kyandra, Sammy, Sophia and Becca all provided the support needed for an excellent team finish. I was really pleased with how they kept their poise throughout the race and competed well against some strong nationally and regionally ranked teams. To finish top 10 among 100 teams and best SEC (Mississippi State, Auburn) and ACC (Louisville) foes is a significant accomplishment. That said, we still have some work to do in continuing to improve for the remainder of the season."

The A-State men placed 27th in the men’s race and were led by Bennett Pascoe. The sophomore raced to a time of 25:38.5 to rank 107th among the 252 runners. Seth Waters was on his heels as he finished 119th with a time of 25:42.6.

"The men’s team did not run particularly well at our first meet so this was an opportunity to show improvement – and they really did," said Chandler. "Bennett and Seth worked well together up front and Ethan, Owen and Jacob were nearby throughout – so the fact they were able to have a loose pack over the 5-mile race with over 250 competitors shows they are learning how to work as a unit in challenging race situations. There were over 100 collegiate teams in three separate races, and to finish 30th overall is a good indication this team is capturing its competitive spirit.  I’m excited to see how well they continue to improve over the coming weeks."

A-State cross country returns to action Saturday, Oct. 13, with select runners heading to the Pre-National meet in Madison, Wis., while several will race in the Little Rock Invitational.
