SAN MARCOS, Texas (9/29/18) – The Arkansas State volleyball team battled league-leader Texas State in all three sets, but suffered a 3-0 setback (22-25, 21-25, 24-26) Saturday night at Strahan Coliseum.
Texas State improves to 4-0 in league play and 13-5 on the season while the Red Wolves fell to 10-7 overall and 2-2 in conference play. A-State hit .200 on the night, but the Bobcats hit .356. A-State had seven aces to the Bobcats three and each team totaled five blocks.
Carlisa May led the Red Wolves with 14 kills, while Tatum Ticknor paced the defense with 13 digs. Ellie Watkins handed out 32 assists and had two blocks, while Isabel Theut led the team with three blocks. Cheyenne Huskey (14), Janell Fitzgerald (11) and Amy Pflughaupt (10) tallied double-digit kills for Texas State. Emily Dewalt dished out 43 assists and added 10 digs for a double-double, one of four players with double-figure digs for Texas State.
A-State got off to a quick start in the first set, building a lead of seven on two different occasions. Texas State clawed back and the Bobcats took six of the last seven to win the set 25-22. After trailing 5-1 early in the second set, A-State rallied to 12-12 tie, but Texas State pulled away to take the set 25-21.
The Red Wolves refused to go away quietly in the third set. A-State trailed 8-5, but went on a 9-1 run to lead the set 14-9 behind three service aces by Macey Putt. Texas State rallied back to knot the set at 17-17 and the two teams battled the remainder of the set. A-State edged in front 23-22 forcing a Bobcats timeout, but Texas State earned the next two points to set up match point. After a kill by May tied it at 24, Texas State closed the set with back-to-back kills to seal the sweep with a 26-24 set three triumph.
Arkansas State returns to action Friday night at Coastal Carolina. First serve is set for 5:30 p.m. (CT).
