IOWA CITY, Ia. (10/12/18) – Arkansas State senior Anita Detlava advanced to the main draw of the 2018 ITA Central Regional Championship on Friday after posting a pair of wins in the qualifying rounds to advance to the tournament’s second day of competition unblemished.

The tournament, hosted by the University of Iowa, features the region’s top tennis talent with student-athlete’s competing in both singles’ and doubles’ competition. Detlava is the first A-State tennis athlete to reach the main draw after going through qualifying rounds since Biljana Miloshevska did so in 2013.

The A-State senior began her day with a 4-6, 6-4 (10-8) victory over Iowa’s Danielle Bauers. She continued with her strong start to the afternoon by following with a straight set 6-2, 6-1 win over Wichita State’s Ting-Ya Hsu.

Deltava will take on Missouri’s Taylor Gruber on Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. in the main draw’s round of 168. The Red Wolves’ Shelby King will also compete in the round of 128 after earning a bye through the qualification rounds and will take on Tulsa’s Megan Hopton at 11:45 a.m.

In other matches, Amelia Guevremont won a qualifying match against North Dakota’s Alex Revening at 6-4, 6-1, but fell short of reaching the main draw with a loss to Wichita State’s Alexandra Lazarova in hard fought 6-3, 4-6 (10-7) outcome.

Berta Masdevall Masip dropped her opening qualifying match to Bradley’s Malini Wijesinghe 6-1, 6-0, while Shannon O'Brien also lost her qualifying to match to Oklahoma’s Alli Hodges 6-2, 6-3.

In the doubles’ tournament, Detlava and Madevall Masip lost their main draw match it Iowa State’s Annabella Bonadonna and Maty Cancini 8-4, while King and O’Brien lost to Kansas’s Malkia Ngounoue and Sonia Smagina 8-3.

The tournament will continue Saturday morning with more single’s main draw and consolation draw pairings.
