JONESBORO, Ark. (10/13/18) – The Arkansas State cross country teams concluded regular season competition on Saturday with a women’s squad finishing 31st at the Pre-National Invitational while the men’s team and an additional women’s squad finished top five at the Little Rock Invitational.

A-State sent its top six women’s runners to Madison, Wis., for the Pre-National Invitational on the Zimmer Championship Course, site of the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championships. In the women’s white race that consisted of nine ranked teams and the defending NCAA champions, A-State placed 31st among the 36 teams.

Anaelle Charles paced the women’s team with a 108th place finish among the 245 individuals. Charles clocked a time of 21:54.1 on the 6k course. Pauline Meyer (133 – 22:08.7), Sammy Brainard (178 – 22:38.3), Sophia Oury (195 – 22:51.6) and Kyandra Chandler (201 – 22:57.0) rounded out the top five for A-State.

"I was pleased how well Pauline closed the gap on Anaelle throughout the race," said A-State cross country coach Kyle Chandler. "The group behind those two did a good job of working together to help us to a good finish among the challenging field we faed."

In Little Rock, the A-State men placed second among 13 teams with Bennett Pascoe pacing the Red Wolves. Pascoe ran a 25:37.8 on the 8k course to place sixth with Seth Waters on his heels in ninth with a time of 25:56.9. Ethan Mychajlonka (11 – 25:59.6), Owen Habeger (16 – 26:13.9) and John Carder (21 – 26:27.6) rounded out the top-five finishers for A-State.

"Our lead men ran well and Bennett took the lead for a while," Chandler said. "Their assertive running payed off as they had a nice finishing pack up at the front. With this performance, our men have nice momentum going into the conference meet."

The A-State women finished fifth in Little Rock among 19 squads. Madison Grimm was the top finisher for the Red Wolves placing 18th overall with a time of 18:49.0 over the 5k course. Megan Adams (26 – 19:09.2), Emily Efurd (31 – 19:14.5), Sophie Leathers (32 – 19:15.2) and Hannah Shelby (39 – 19:29.7) rounded out the top-five finishers.

"We were pleased how this group stepped up and competed well despite not having the top runners," Chandler said. "We were one of the better teams in the field and our performances showcased the quality depth we have on the women's side."

Next up for the Red Wolves is the Sun Belt Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 27, in Mobile, Ala.
