IOWA CITY, Ia. (10/13/18) – The Arkansas State women’s tennis team continued competition at the 2018 ITA Central Regional Championship hosted by the University of Iowa on Saturday with two student-athletes continuing play in the main draw of the singles’ bracket.

Anita Detlava, who qualified for the main draw on Friday, and Shelby King each opened the day with a pair of matches in the main draw, but both failed to secure victories that would have advanced them into the next round.

In her first match of the tournament, King took on Tulsa’s Megan Hopton and lost in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. King then moved into the consolation bracket where she defeated Oklahoma’s Skyler Miller 4,-6, 6-4, 10-8 to move into the round of 16 bracket on Sunday. The A-State junior will take on Southeast Missouri’s Kseniya Zonova at 10 a.m.

Detlava took on Missouri’s Taylor Gruber in her opening round match and battled the SEC opponent to a 7-5 first less before Gruber finished off the match with another closely contested 6-4 loss in the second set. Following the match Detlava opted of the singles’ consolation bracket due to a back injury.

The tournament will continue Sunday morning with more single’s main draw and consolation draw pairings.
