JONESBORO, Ark. (10/24/18) – Arkansas State redshirt guard Akasha Westbrook has been named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt First Team, while the Red Wolves were picked fifth in the league’s Coaches’ Preseason Poll.

Westbrook led A-State with 13.4 points and finished second on the squad with 5.4 rebounds per game in 2017-18.  She became the first Red Wolves’ player since Sonja Tate in 1992-93 to lead the league in steals with 71 (2.4 per game) and was one of just eight players in the SBC to have an efficiency rating of 10 or better.

The Malvern, Ark., native scored in double-digits in 14 consecutive games last season and finished as an All-Sun Belt Conference Second-Team pick. She scored in double-digits in 24 of her 29 games and the team in both scoring and rebounds eight times. She turned a career-high 23 points against South Alabama on Feb. 10 and had a career-best 11 rebound night against UT Arlington on Jan. 11.

Westbrook shot a team-best 48.1 percent from the field, sixth best in the conference while also knocking down 79.7 percent of her free throw attempts.

Arkansas State was picked fifth in the Sun Belt’s Coaches’ Preseason Poll and garnered 95 points, just two behind Texas State and UT Arlington for third place. Little Rock was picked first with 133 points and eight first-place votes, while Troy finished second with 131 points and four first-place votes. Little Rock’s Ronjanae DeGray was tabbed as the Preseason Sun Belt Player of the Year.

The Red Wolves tip-off the 2018-19 season with a pair of exhibition contests against Arkansas Fort-Smith (Oct. 30) and Arkansas-Monticello (Nov. 5). The team opens regular season competition Nov. 9 at Oklahoma State, followed by the home opener against Memphis Nov. 12.
