JONESBORO, Ark. (11/27/18) – Arkansas State head women’s golf coach M.J. Desbiens Shaw has announced that high-school standouts Kayla Burke, Sydni Leung and Elise Schultz have all signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Red Wolves starting in the 2019-20 season.
“I’m thrilled to add these three recruits for next year,” said Desbiens Shaw. “We continue adding depth to our roster, and Kayla, Sydni and Elise all bring great experience with them. I’m grateful for the opportunity to coach them, and I look forward to them joining our team in August.”
All three players will be freshmen next season after enjoying success at both the high school and junior levels. Burke is from Port Colborne, Ontario, where she attended Welland Centennial Secondary School and won the SOSSA as both a sophomore and senior. She also competed in the OFSSA all four years of her high school career, collecting a best finish of seventh place.
Burke was selected to represent Team Canada CJGA for the North American Cup in South Carolina, going on to win the event. She finished tied for 13th place at the Ontario Junior Girls U19 and also won a CJGA event at King Forest, shooting an 80-77.
Burke also made the championship flight of the Western Junior championships, won the Niagra District Championships, claimed the Woman’s Four-Ball Championship title and took medalist honors at the U.S. Kids Canadian Invitational two years in a row.
Leung has held a 75 scoring average while competing at junior and high school tournaments during her time at Plano Senior High School in Plano, Texas. She has posted over 20 tournament championships during her career.
A high school all-district selection and top-10 regional qualifier, Leung has been a member of the National Junior Honor Society and HOSA Future Health Professionals. She received a Plano Senior High School Certificate of Achievement in 2015 as the “Most Improved Golfer.”
Some of Leung’s most recent individual championships include the North Texas PGA’s North Texas Junior Showcase, Nike Junior Golf Camps Spring Showcase, North Texas 54 Holes and Jim McLean Golf Academy Fort Worth Shootout.
Leung was also selected to represent The First Tee of Greater Dallas at the Pure Insurance Championships at Pebble Beach, was a USGA Junior Girls qualifier and Ben Hogan Junior Cup Match qualifier.
Schultz will come to Arkansas State from Pace High School in Pace, Fla. She holds a 75 scoring average and has been named 1st Team All-Area and finished among the top-25 players at the state tournament.
A four-year high school All-Area choice, Schultz was named the area’s Player of the Year as both a sophomore and senior. She won three district titles and claimed a regional championship as a senior after carding a 3-under 69 at the tournament.
Schultz was also a three-time Hurricane Junior Golf Tour champion and competed in the Pure Insurance Championship at Pebble Beach in September of 2018.
