CONWAY, Ark. (9/29/19) – The Arkansas State women’s tennis team continued its 2019 fall tournament season with an in-state trip to Conway, Ark., to participate in the Central Arkansas Fall Classic.
The tournament began on Friday with two rounds of doubles’ competition and continued into Saturday with three rounds of singles’ flights and another round of doubles flight brackets. Over the course of the tournament, Arkansas State captured four doubles wins and seven singles victories.
“We competed really well Saturday,” said A-State head coach Kel Lange. “I was proud of all of our efforts, but what made me the proudest was the fact that we did a much better job competing each individual point. I really believe that this group, if they are committed and competing, is special.”
A-State earned three of the four doubles points in flight one. Pornpawee Pramethong and Berta Masdevall Masip lost their initial match to a pair from Louisiana Tech, 6-2, but came back to take the next two matchups against duos from SEMO, 6-2 in both matches. Shelby King and Shannon O’Brien fell in their first doubles contest against a pair from UCA 6-0, but came back to defeat a pair from Louisiana Tech 7-6 (4). After a first round lost to a pair from Louisiana Tech, Amelia Guevremont and Jil Morse took their second matchup with a win over a duo from Austin Peay 6-1.
Pramethong was the standout in singles play for A-State earning two victories before falling in the final. Pramethong defeated Illana Tetraushivilli of Louisiana Tech in her initial match (4-6, 6-3, 10-6) and then advanced after Fabienne Schmidt of Austin Peay withdrew because of injury. Pramethong fell in her final match against Danielle Morris of Austin Peay (1-6, 2-6). After a loss to Morris in her first match (0-6, 0-6), King finished sixth in flight one of singles by way of Fuka Nonoyama from UCA withdrawing due to injury.
Guevremont lost her singles opener against Sneha Sinha from SEMO (6-1, 4-6, 9-11), but fought back to win her next two matchups. Guevremont defeated Andrea Perez of Louisiana Tech (6-3, 7-5) and followed by defeating Caroline Gibbens from Chattanooga (5-7, 6-3, 10-7). Quammen added a singles victory with a defeat of Madison Cefalu from Louisiana Tech (7-5, 6-1) and Lizzy Babos defeated Paulina Engback of UCA (6-3, 6-3).
