JONESBORO, Ark. (10/18/19) – With two weeks separating the Arkansas State cross country teams from the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Championships, the Red Wolves are set to compete in a pair of meets Saturday.
One group of Red Wolves will run in the prestigious Under Armour Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Indiana, hosted by Indiana State. The race will be held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course – the site of 12 of the last 15 NCAA Championship meets dating back to 2002. The race serves as a regular-season preview of the championship course for the nation’s top teams.
Another contingent will remain in the Natural State to represent A-State at the Little Rock Invitational, held at War Memorial Park.
At Pre-Nationals, the A-State women, ranked fifth in the South Central region, will open up the day in the women’s 6K Blue Race at 10 a.m. CT. The men, ranked sixth in the region, will run in the 8K Blue race at 10:35 a.m. CT. Live results can be found here with splits at 2K and 4K for the women and 3K and 5K for the men, while FloTrack is also streaming the event via its subscription-based service.
In the women’s race in Terre Haute, the Red Wolves face 10 teams ranked in the top 30 in the most recent USTFCCCA national rankings along with a pair of squads who received votes. Top-10 foes BYU (2nd), Colorado (3rd), Michigan (7th) and Washington (8th) highlight the field, while 11th-ranked Boise State and Florida State join Ole Miss (17th), Illinois (20th), Boston College (26th), Oklahoma State (30th) and vote-getters Butler and Virginia Tech.
Like the women’s race, 10 nationally-ranked opponents await the Red Wolves in the men’s 8K, led by three top five teams in BYU (2nd), Colorado (3rd) and Washington (4th). Eighth-ranked Ole Miss is the other top-10 team in the race, joining top-30 counterparts Oklahoma State (14th), Indiana (15th), Iona (21st), Arkansas (27th), Virginia Tech (29th) and Florida State (30th). Vote-getters Duke, Iowa and Villanova are also slated to run, giving the Red Wolves plenty of opportunities to continue their strong season against the best teams in the nation. A-State is joined by the Razorbacks as the only two regional teams, with Arkansas coming in at No. 2 in the regional rankings.
In Little Rock, the Red Wolves will toe the line against a trio of conference foes on the women’s side and two on the men’s side. Georgia State, Louisiana and host Little Rock are slated to compete in the women’s race while Little Rock and Louisiana are sending men’s teams to the meet. In addition to the Red Wolves, Trojans and Ragin’ Cajuns, Central Arkansas joins as part of four South Central Region teams in the event.
The Little Rock Invitational will begin at 10 a.m. with the men’s 8K followed by the women’s 5K at 10:45 a.m.
