DALLAS, Texas (1/19/18) – The Arkansas State women’s team dropped two matches on Friday afternoon to No. 25 TCU and to Southern Miss as the squad opened the 2018 dual match portion of its schedule.

The Red Wolves fell to 4-0 to the Horned Frogs in their first match of the day and then dropped a close contest to Southern Miss 4-2 to start the season at 0-2.

In the match against Southern Miss, A-State picked up victories from Berta Masdevall Masip and Shelby King, while Kirsty Venter was ahead in her singles’ match when the Golden Eagles clinched the match point.

King bounced back after dropping the first set, to take her matchup with Arina Amaning 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, while Masdevall Masip downed Taint Lopez, 7-5, 6-3. Venter had won the first set 7-5 and was head 2-1 in her match but was unable to finish due to time restrictions.

Shannon O'Brien lost a tough contest in the No. 5 match against Elena Roca 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. O’Brien was ahead in the third set before eventually losing the set.

In the doubles’ matches, Southern Miss was able to take the point with victories in match’s No. 1 and 2, while Sabina Jeresic and Venter won the No. 3 match 6-2.

“We showed a lot of heart and will to win today,” A-State head coach Kel Lange said. “We played far from our best tennis and should have won. I’m a little disappointed in one regard, but also really encouraged in the other.”

A-State got off to a rough start in the day’s first match against the No. 25 Horned Frogs and dropped their season opener 4-0. TCU captured the doubles’ point with a 6-3 victory in the No. 1 doubles match and a 6-2 win in the No. 3 match. The no. 2 match, which featured King and O’Brien was tied at 5-5 when the doubles’ point was decided.

TCU’s momentum carried over into its single matches where the Horned Frogs took home victories in the No. 1, 2 and 5 matches. King lost the No. 1 match to Donika Bashota 6-0, 6-2, while Detlava lost to Aleksandra Zenovka 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 match. TCU was able to close out the match when Stevie Kennedy downed Shannon O’Brien 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 5 match.

A-State returns to action Monday, Jan. 22 with a doubleheader match against Mississippi State in Starkville. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
