COLLEGE STATION, Texas. (11/10/17) – The Arkansas State cross country teams capped off the 2017 season at the NCAA South Central Regional meet Friday morning in College Station, Texas.
The women’s squad finished 15th out of 24 teams marking the eighth-straight season the squad has finished or been ranked among the top-15 at the NCAA South Central Regional. Anaelle Charles finished off a stellar season as she once again paced the women’s squad. She finished the 6k course in 21:28.3 to place 54th overall in the individual standings. Elizabeth Gillette was on her heels as she finished 63rd overall with a time of 21:38.7. Pauline Meyer (68th – 21:42.6), Sammy Brainard (97th – 22:12.5) and Erin Nunan (126th – 22:43.9) rounded out the top five finishers for the Red Wolves.
"The top three women - Anaelle, Elizabeth and Pauline - all ran very well," said A-State cross country coach Kyle Chandler. "About 500 meters into the race, a runner fell down in front of Anaelle and Elizabeth and they both fell down tripping over the fallen runner. Although the lost perhaps 30-40 positions during that episode, they kept their composure and gradually worked their way up through the rest of the race. As a group, the women showed great focus and attention moving the team score from 22nd about the 1.5 mile mark to 15th by the end of the race."
The men’s squad closed the year with a 22nd place finish at the NCAA South Central Regional. Seth Waters paced the squad as he was 90th overall in the individual standings with a 10k time of 32:20.9. Rickus Jacobs overcame an injury plagued season to finish second among the Red Wolves, 106th overall, with a time of 32:37.6. Bennett Pascoe (117th – 32:57.3), John Carder (134th – 33:31.8) and Jacob Oury (140th – 33:43.6) rounded out the top five for A-State.
"Although we didn't place as high as we hoped, we competed better as a team compared to the conference race," Chandler said. "For our five freshmen who competed today, this was their first 10k and I was so proud of the way they were able to focus throughout the longer race."
A-State is set to open the indoor track and field season on Sunday, December 3, with the A-State Kickoff Klassic at First National Bank Arena.
