EUGENE, Ore. (6/7/18) – Arkansas State junior sprinter Caitland Smith closed her collegiate season at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday at historic Hayward Field.
Smith raced in the second of three 100-meter dash heats and placed sixth with a time of 11.46 seconds. The top two finishers in each heat and the next two fastest times advanced to the final on Saturday. Smith wound up 20th in the overall standings with her sprint.
“Caitland has done a great job this season,” said A-State head coach Jim Patchell. “She did a great job of coming in this season as a transfer and fitting in well. She improved throughout the season and ran a personal best at the regionals to get here. Today, she ran a decent time that was probably one of her top-five performances. Caitland has done well for herself and she’s got another year with us. She’s probably a year away from doing something really special and this was great experience for her moving forward.”
Smith is one of two A-State women competing at the NCAA Outdoor Championships this week. Calea Carr competes in the discus throw on Saturday at 5:05 p.m. (CT). The A-State men see their season come to a close as Sun Belt Conference Indoor and Outdoor Champions.
