SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. (5/14/19) – Led by Julien Sale’s team-best 70, the Arkansas State men’s golf team shot a second-round 290 Monday at the University of Louisville Golf Club and moved up one spot in the Louisville Regional standings into a tie for ninth place.

The Red Wolves’ score marked a five-stroke improvement over their first-round total yesterday and was the seventh lowest of the day among the 13-team field.  A-State now holds a combined 585 score as it stands tied with Mississippi State and is six strokes behind eighth-place West Virginia.

While A-State was able to improve both its score and standing, it will enter tomorrow’s final round 14 strokes behind fifth-place Louisville, which shot a 291 today.  The top five teams in the final standings, as well as the top individual finisher not on one of those teams, will advance to the NCAA Championships’ finals.

“Our guys played hard today and got off to a way better start (than yesterday),” said A-State head coach Mike Hagen.  “We had a couple of small mistakes early, but actually started very well and were within a handful of shots of fifth place at one point.  That was a good sign to be within striking distance as we made the turn, but it seemed like a couple of guys just ran out of gas coming in and others hung tight.

“Overall though, it was a better round and we were more consistent.  They fought hard today, and they’ll continue to fight hard, so anything can happen if we have a good day tomorrow and put ourselves in a position to have the opportunity to advance.”

Sale, a junior, cut five strokes off his first-round score during the second 18 holes, helping him climb from tied for 53rd place into a tie for 28th, which currently leads the team along with senior Joel Wendin.  Shooting a second-round 73, Wendin also holds a combined 145 score.

Like Sale, junior Matt Cole improved his score by five strokes after shooting a 72 today.  He now has a 149 total to place him tied for 54th, while junior Zan Luka Stirn stands tied for 48th with a 148 that includes a second-round 75.  Also competing for A-State, freshman Luka Naglic is tied for 60th place with a 151 after shooting a 76 today.

Tomorrow’s third and final round of the Louisville Regional is set to begin at 6:30 a.m. (CT), although the first A-State player won’t tee off until 7:25 a.m.
