LAWRENCE, Kan. (10/21/17) – Arkansas State women’s tennis sophomore Berta Masdevall Masip advanced to the semifinals of the consolation bracket after the third day of competition of the 2017 ITA Central Regional hosted by the University of Kansas.
Masip began her day with a thrilling victory over Western Illinois’ Natalia Bravo in a match that went to three set and needed a tie break to decide a winner. The transfer from Milwaukee won the first set 6-4, but Bravo bounced back with a 7-6 win in the second set to even the match. Masip then came out with a win in an exciting 13-11 third set.
In the quarter finals, she squared off against Jovana Antonijevic of Oral Roberts and took the match in straight sets 7-6, 6-1. Masip is now set to face off against Southeast Missouri State’s Kseniya Zonova Sunday morning for the right to advance to the consolation bracket finals.
In other matches on Saturday, Sabina Jeresic defeated SEMO’s Alessandra Maya Thompson 6-4, 6-7 (8-6), 10-4, while Shelby King and Anita Detlava each dropped their matches. King lost to Drake’s Elizaveta Petushkova 6-3, 6-0, while Detlava lost to Nebraska’s Kati Matysova 6-0, 6-2.
The tournament continues Sunday afternoon with semifinal and final round matches.
