SPARTANBURG, S.C. (10/27/17) – The Arkansas State women’s tennis team picked up four victories on the first day of tournament competition at the Wofford Invite played at the Reeved Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.

The Red Wolves captured three wins in the singles’ bracket after Kirsty Venter and Shannon O'Brien each won their first round main draw matches. Berta Masdevall Masip added a victory in her first match of the consolation bracket, while O’Brien and Venter teamed to win a doubles match.

Venter began her day in the singles’ draw with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sansriti Ranjan of Savannah State. O’Brien followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Bluefield College’s Gema Mendoza, while Masip downed Sofia Shut’Ko of Savannah State 6-4, 6-4 in the consolation bracket.

In the doubles’ bracket Anita Detlava and Masip earned a 6-4 victory over Western Carolina’s Jordyn King and Savannah Taranto. O’Brien and Venter lost the other doubles’ match of the day 6-4 to the Catamount’s Lauren McCall and Carli Deehr.

“We started our strong in both singles’ and doubles’ play today,” Kel Lange said. “We tapered off in the afternoon but rebounded strong to close out the day.”

In other singles’ action, Venter dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Wofford’s Britt Wilbur, while O’Brien was defeated by UNC-Ashville’s Amalie Davidson 6-1, 6-2. Masip’s loss in the main was a tough 1-6, 6-3, 10-3 match against Western Carolina’s Alexa Webb.

Shelby King and Detlava each lost both of their singles’ matches on the day. Detlava dropped a 6-3, 6-2 match to Wofford’s Jenna Vroman, followed by a 6-3, 6-3 setback against Charlotte Van Diemen of Georgia Southern. King fell to Alory Pereira of East Tennessee State 6-1, 6-2 followed by a 6-4, 6-2 loss to Western Carolina’s Jordyn King.

Competition continues Saturday morning with doubles’ competition followed by play in the singles’ draw, weather permitting.
