JONESBORO, Ark. (10/30/17) – A-State’s Carlisa May earned her second consecutive Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week accolade, while Ellie Watkins picked up her second SBC Setter of the Week award the league office announced Monday afternoon.
A native of Lee’s Summit, Mo., May led the league with a 5.00 kills per set average over the nomination period. She had 30 total kills and hit .400 across the Red Wolves’ sweeps of Georgia State and Georgia Southern. The outside hitter posted nine kills against the Panthers, but exploded for 21 versus the Eagles on a season-high .562 hitting percentage.
This is May’s fourth Offensive Player of the Week honor from the conference and her 14th career weekly award with seven being OPOW accolades. The junior leads the Red Wolves with 381 kills and her 4.10 per set average is second in the SBC.
A native of Weldon Spring, Mo., Watkins handed out 69 assists for an 11.50 per set mark in the two wins over Georgia State and Georgia Southern. The junior dished out 29 assists versus the Panthers and followed with 40 more against the Eagles. She helped the Red Wolves to a .464 attacking percentage against Georgia Southern, which was the best percentage by an A-State team since Sept. 16, 2011 when the Red Wolves hit .654 versus Alcorn State.
This award is the second of the season for Watkins, who also had 10 kills, 10 digs, and two blocks. The setter also registered seven kills on seven attempts in the win over Georgia Southern to help the team to its .464 hitting percentage.
Arkansas State travels to San Marcos, Texas to face Texas State Friday, Nov. 3 in its next match with first serve set for 6:30 p.m.
