BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (4/17/11) – The Arkansas State baseball team was down 3-1 entering the ninth inning but scored two runs off a Jordan Castaldo two-out single and retook the lead in the 10th on a two-out RBI single by Zach Maggio to give ASU a 4-3 Sun Belt Conference win over Western Kentucky in extra innings at Nick Denes Field.
WKU got a runner on in the ninth but Brandon Farley picked up his first win of the season forcing WKU’s Jared Andrioli intoto a fly-out to Logan Uxa ending the contest. Andreoli was 4-5 when he stepped into the batter’s box in the 10th.
ASU improved to 16-22 with a 5-10 mark in league play while WKU fell to 24-13 with a 10-5 mark in Sun Belt contests.
“I think our team showed a little bit of character today after going through what they have been through. In so many one run games and grinding through it. It was a very difficult day, they pitched it very well and we had some very tough at bats and they played very good defense,” said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. “We persevered with two outs, we got a couple of guys on and were able to find some green on the grass with Castaldo and in the 10th Maggio got a big hit for us to get the RBI.”
WKU was in position to get its first run of the game with two outs in the bottom of the third when Kes Carter singled to right field while Logan Robbins was on second. But, ASU defended the play well as Todd Baumgartner fired the ball to Tyler Smith at home who was bowled over by Robbins but held onto the ball during the collision at the plate ending the frame.
Todd Baumgartner broke the scoreless tie with a two-out double in the seventh inning scoring Michael Faulkner from third and giving ASU a 1-0 lead.
WKU took the lead in the bottom of the inning scoring three on a two-RBI line drive from Casey Dykes and a single by Jared Andreoli
ASU tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the ninth when Jordan Castaldo singled-home Faulkner and Anthony Hecht with a two-out single to right field. Faulkner and Emery were walked and Hecht pinch-ran for Emery
Maggio recorded his first hit of the game at the perfect time to take the lead for ASU in the top of the 10th. Geogre led ASU at the plate going 2-5 for the Red Wolves to lead the squad in the contest, while Faulkner, Maggio, Baumgartner, Castaldo and Jones each had a hit for A-State.
Farley (1-2) took the win pitching 2.1 scoreless innings for the Red Wolves giving up two hits and striking out one. Jacob Lee pitched a stellar game in the start for ASU allowing no runs and striking out six batters. Taylor Haydel (5-3) took the loss to WKU pitching the final inning allowing two hits and one earned run.
WKU outhit ASU 15-7 while committing three errors. ASU was perfect in the field with no miscues.
The Red Wolves return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Southeast Missouri State. Game time in SEMO is set for 5 p.m.
