|ASU Baseball Tops Murray State in Home Opener|
JONESBORO (2/22/12) - The Arkansas State baseball team claimed its first victory of the season Wednesday, topping Murray State 11-3 in its home opener at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field.
The Red Wolves extended their winning streak in home openers to 22 games, a run that dates back to the 1991 season. A-State now stands 1-3 on the young season, while Murray State dropped its first road game of the year to fall to 2-3.
Trailing 1-0, Arkansas State scored runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish the rest of the game. ASU starting pitcher Levi Shordon gave up his only run in the first inning and allowed just three hits over four innings of work to pick up the victory. ASU's bullpen allowed two final runs in the fifth inning, but kept Murray State off the scoreboard the rest of the way.
The Red Wolves added another run in the sixth to make the score 5-3, which held up until the bottom of the eighth inning. The Red Wolves recorded five of their 14 hits in the eighth, exploding for six more runs to set the final score.
ASU used five pitchers in the game, including Brandon Farley who recorded five strikeouts in just two innings of work. Along with Farley, Daniel Wright and John Koch didn't allow a run during their appearances. The pitching staff combined to allow seven hits while recording nine strikeouts.
The A-State offense was led by eight players with a hit, including catcher Stuart Levy with a a game-high three. Michael Faulkner posted two hits and a game-high four RBI, while Logan Uxa was responsible for the Red Wolves' second home run of the season.
The game marked the first of 10 consecutive home games for ASU, which will begin a four-game weekend series with Evansville on Friday at 6 p.m.
