Potts’ Walk-Off Single Gives ASU 3-2 Win Over UALR
JONESBORO, Ark. (3/17/12) - Junior Alex Potts delivered a two-out, walk-off RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the 10th to give the Arkansas State Red Wolves (10-8, 2-0) a 3-2 victory over the UALR Trojans (13-7, 0-2) Saturday afternoon in Sun Belt Conference baseball action at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field.
The win, coupled with Friday's 7-3 Arkansas State victory, clinches the win for the Red Wolves in the three-game SBC weekend series.
Sophomore Zach George put ASU in position to get the win when he came up with a two-out single through the left side. George moved to second on a balk, then slid across home ahead of the tag when Potts' single glanced off of UALR pitcher Elliot Velazquez and bounced to the edge of the outfield before UALR second baseman Chris Burk could make the throw home.
Sophomore Bradley Wallace picked up the win on the mound for ASU, striking out five batters and giving up just two hits while working the final three innings. Wallace gave up one unearned run and did not issue a walk.
"It was a great ballgame all-around," said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. "Their guy on the mound did a great job. They have a very difficult lineup and I was very proud of our two guys on the mound. Wallace and Daniel Wright were outstanding in facing that type of hitting club."
"I was proud of the way our guys persevered," added Raffo. "Potts is a guy that has played a lot and we feel good about putting him in ballgames. What a great at-bat for him. It was great to see him come through."
The Red Wolves scored twice in the third on RBI hits from George and shortstop Dustin Jones, and the ASU lead held until UALR managed to tie the game in the eighth.
Junior right-hander Daniel Wright started on the mound for ASU and worked a season-high seven innings, giving up one run on three hits while striking out five and walking three. Wright surrendered the run to center fielder Cameron Bentley in the fifth when Bentley singled to right-center field to put UALR on the board.
The Trojans tied the game at 2-2 in the eighth when Bentley reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to third on an ASU throwing error and scored on a groundout from shortstop Greg Garcia.
Junior Bubba Cooper (1-2) took the loss on the mound for UALR, giving up one run on two hits, with no walks and no strikeouts in two innings of work. UALR starter Blake Huffman worked 7.1 innings, giving up two runs on six hits, striking out five and walking three on the day.
George led ASU at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while catcher Stuart Levy was also 2-for-4. Bentley went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead UALR.
Arkansas State will go for the series sweep when game three gets underway Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
