JONESBORO, Ark. (5/8/12) - After delivering a walk-off single to drive in the winning run in ASU's 2-1 Sun Belt Conference victory over South Alabama Sunday, ASU junior Alex Potts has been named the CollegeSportsMadness.com Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week.
Potts came into the game as a pinch-hitter in the ninth with the bases loaded, and delivered the RBI single to right field, giving the Red Wolves their first-ever three-game sweep of the Jaguars. The Red Wolves faced a 1-0 deficit heading into the ninth, but managed to load the bases with no outs to start the ninth-inning rally.
Arkansas State is now 26-19 overall and 15-7 in Sun Belt Conference play, trailing league-leader Florida Atlantic by just one game with six games remaining.
With Sunday's win, the Red Wolves also clinched a berth in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, scheduled for May 23-27 in Bowling Green, Ky. Arkansas State is assured of no worse than the No. 6 seed in the eight-team field, and can secure at least the No. 2 spot with a series victory at home over next weekend's opponent, Florida International.
Arkansas State returns to action today when the Red Wolves travel to Little Rock to take on UAPB in a 3:30 p.m. game at Dickey-Stephens Park.
