JONESBORO, Ark. (4/18/14) – David Owen pitched effectively, Arkansas State’s hitters laced balls over Kell Field and the Red Wolves won their fourth straight with an 8-4 victory Louisiana-Monroe Friday night in a Sun Belt Conference opening series.

Eric Wilcoxson had two hits, including a homer, while Owen struck out four and gave up one run on three hits to improve to a team best 5-2 on the year. He struck out the side in the fourth inning and lowered his season ERA to 3.96.

Seven of Wilcoxson’s 13 hits on the season have gone for extra-bases, the last of which was a rocket that hit off the scoreboard in right-centerfield in the fifth inning that gave the Red Wolves (22-16, 11-5 SBC) an 8-1 advantage.

Matt Burgess and Austin Baker drove in two runs on two hits each for A-State and Ty Michelotti and Joe Schrimpf each had one hit and one RBI in the victory.

Michelotti singled through the right side later in the inning that scored Burgess as A-State tagged Alex Hermeling for three runs and four hits in the first inning.

Hermeling (1-5) allowed five runs on six hits and one walk in three innings.

Baker drove in his second run of the game with an RBI single in the second, while Schrimpf plated a run in third inning with a single up the middle. Burgess continued the hot hitting in the fourth inning on a crazy play that resulted in an RBI infield hit.

The sophomore first baseman hit a high chopper to second base and reached when both the second baseman and first baseman attempted to make a play on the ball and left first base uncovered. Wilcoxson, who had advanced to third on a wild pitch, scored easily, but Baker was tagged out after advancing to second and then attempted to go to third but retreated to second base but Burgess also advanced to second on the play and Baker was tagged out.

ULM (16-24, 7-9 SBC)s scored three runs in eighth inning but Tanner Gaines entered the game in eighth in relief of Coulton Lee who had given up three consecutive double. Gaines gave up a run, but it was charged Lee and then worked an uneventful ninth to give the Red Wolves the win.
