JONESBORO, Ark.
(2/15/2012) — Three Arkansas State
players scored in double figures and the Red Wolves (11-15, 5-8) forced 29
turnovers in a 62-39 Sun Belt Conference women’s basketball victory over the
Troy Trojans (2-22, 1-12) Wednesday night at the ASU Convocation Center.
Sophomore
forward Jane Morrill led A-State with 13 points, senior guard Meghan Lewis came
off the bench to knock down four three-pointers and finish with 12 points and
senior guard NeNe Hurst-McLennan scored 11 points. Junior guard Ashley Olvera added nine points,
seven assists, six rebounds and a steal, while committing just two turnovers.
The Red
Wolves’ 29 turnovers forced ties their season high, and the 39 points was the
fewest given up on the season by Arkansas State.
Arkansas
State led 32-19 at the break after going on a 16-6 run in the final 10 minutes
of the half. A-State forced 17 turnovers
in the first 20 minutes, and back-to-back three pointers from senior Meghan
Lewis sparked the Red Wolves’ run into halftime. Lewis’ second three-pointer gave ASU a 16-13
lead, and after a Troy basket, a three-pointer from freshman Hanna Qedan and a
bucket and free throw from Morrill ignited an 11-0 run for the Red Wolves.
Lewis and
Hurst-McLennan led Arkansas State at halftime with nine points each, and
Morrill added seven.
“It was a
good performance by us, especially on the defensive end,” said ASU head coach
Brian Boyer. “I thought we put together
a very good first half defensively. I
was just harping and harping in the second half for us to put together a complete
game defensively, and I think we did that.”
“Offensively,
I thought we did okay,” added Boyer. “At
times it got frustrating because of how tightly-packed the defense was. But I thought over the course of the game we
got enough openings and got things spread out enough were we could get some
scores against them.”
Troy scored
the first two buckets of the second half to trim the ASU lead to nine at 32-23,
but by the 10-minute mark, the Red Wolves led by 16 at 46-30. Arkansas State held the Trojans to nine
points in the final 10 minutes and led by as many as 25 down the stretch.
Olvera and
junior Andi Watson led ASU on the boards with six rebounds each, helping the
Red Wolves edge Troy 32-31 on the glass.
Arkansas State outscored Troy 30-20 in the paint, 14-0 in second-chance
points thanks to a 12-6 advantage on the offensive boards, and the Red Wolves’
bench outscored Troy’s reserves 21-8.
Guard Sarah
McAppion led Troy with 15 points.
The Red Wolves will play their final home game of the season Feb 18 when
they host FIU in a 3:05 p.m. Sun Belt Conference battle at the ASU Convocation
Center. Senior Day festivities will get
underway approximately 15 minutes prior to tipoff, and the game has been
designated as ASU’s PinkZone game to promote cancer awareness.
