JONESBORO, Ark. (10/30/18) – Led by four players in double-figures, the Arkansas State women’s basketball team defeated Arkansas-Fort Smith 100-73 in an exhibition matchup Tuesday evening at First National Bank Arena.
Akasha Westbrook scored 18 points and grabbed five rebounds, Morgan Wallace added 14 points and four assists and the high-octane Red Wolves put their athleticism on full display in getting past the Lions -- putting up huge numbers even after sputtering through the first quarter.
“This is what you want out of an exhibition game,” A-State head coach Brian Boyer said. “We a lot of things early on that they did that we didn’t handle well, but I think you saw that we have an ability to score especially when we get into space in the open court.”
Jada Ford knocked down four 3-pointers on her way to 13 points and Kayla Williams rounded out the box score with 10 points, three assists, two rebounds and two steals for the Red Wolves, who outscored UAFS 34-15 in the third quarter.
Arkansas Fort-Smith led 25-17 after the first quarter and scored 16 points at the first media timeout.
A-State got back on track in the second quarter and forced the Lions into nine turnovers in the period, before exploding for 34 points in the third quarter. Freshman Jordan Elder scored seven points in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, including a four-point play that pushed lead to 55-21 with midway through the quarter.
Nine different players scored for A-State in the third period as the team pushed its exhibition record to a perfect 27-0 since the 2005-06 season.
Mariah Green scored 19 and Daijah Brown added 13 for the Lions, who were outscored 83-48 over the final three quarters.
A-State returns to the court Monday, Nov. 5 for its second and final exhibition matchup of the season against Arkansas-Monticello. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. at First National Bank Arena.
